The Elite debuted at the 1957 London Motor Car Show, much to the salivation of "carefully selected race teams", who then developed the car through racing for a year before it went on sale to the public. At the time, the Elite's innovative fiberglass monocoque construction was unheard of. While the Corvette of the era used Fiberglass bodywork as well, it was not a stressed structural part of the car.
The Elite was equipped with a 1.2L inline 4-cylinder motor, which produced 75 HP. It might not sound like much, but in a car weighing only 1,100 lbs, it was more than adequate. In 1960, an SE version was released, bumping the output up to 85 HP. In racing form, the engine made up to as much as 105 HP. The stout 4-cylinder, all-around independent suspension, and an unbelievable drag coefficient of .29 (slippery by even today's standards!) brought the cars to six class victories at the 24 Hours of LeMans!
When production was finished, about 1030 had been built. Another version was released in 1974, but it's so hideous, I'm not even going to post a picture of that one.
